I tried the install the most recent version of VMRC which can be found here and I got this error message during the installation:
I found the KB2130850 which mentioned that I should uninstall all vSphere Client instances, install VMRC and reinstall all vSphere Client instances. Unfortunately this was not the solution. I have then uninstalled the Horizon View Client too to be on the safe side. Again this was also not the solution.
Can’t install VMware, ’failed to install USB inf file’ I’m having an issue installing VMware Workstation Player 12.5.3. It is currently uninstalled, and I have deleted every single file related to VMware and every registry key related to VMware by following their guide (I even went as far as to search the entire registry for the keyword ’vmware. Installing the VMware Remote Console fails with the error: VMInstallHcmon - Failed to install hcmon driver.
*Windows: A Windows ZIP install file. Download the file, right click on it and select install (as Administrator) Mac OS: The Mac client. Download and double click on the dmg file. Linux: Bundle for Linux OSes. Download the bundle, make it executable and run it as the root user.
*The installation of the VMware Remote Console (VMRC) fails. You see the error: VMInstallHcmon - Failed to install hcmon driver.
*اگر در زمان نصب برنامه VMWare Remote Console، با ارور Failed to install the hcmon driver روبرو شده اید، راه حل های ساده این ارور را با هم در این پست خواهیم دید.
I have then checked the vminst.log which can be found in the %TEMP% folder and saw the following error messages:
VNLCopyFileToSystemDir: Copying ‘C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesVMwareUSBhcmon.sys’ to ‘C:Windowssystem32drivershcmon.sys’
VNLGetLocalizedString: Failed to allocate a localized string 0x00000020: 317
VNLCopyFileToSystemDir: Failed to copy file: “C:Windowssystem32drivershcmon.sys”. (null) [32]
VNL_InstallHcmon: Failed to create service for hcmon driver.
This looked like that there are not sufficient permissions to copy the hcmon.sys to the destination folder, although the installer told me that he is using elevated permissions:
Because you haven’t “Run as Administrator” for msi packages I used an elevated cmd prompt to start the msi with Administrator permissions and lo and behold VMRC was installed without problems. There are 2 possibilities from my point of view why this happened.
*The elevation process of setups was little bit changed in Windows 10
*The hcmon.sys file was already there and the elevated permission was to less to replace it.
I did a quick check about these possibilities and it was 2. When there is an existing hcmon.sys (from vSphere Client), VMRC installer can’t replace it even if the installer gets elevated for installation. The only possibility was to start the installer as Administrator to get the hcmon.sys in the C:WindowsSystem32 directory replaced.Related posts:

The HCMON drive is a virtual USB driver HCMon is a virtual USB driver to allow the connection of your physical USB ports to virtual machines. When your installing the your VMware product of choice, HCMON is installed as a hardware driver, which is the problem. Windows interprets this as a user adding hardware to the PC and in many environments that is something your operating system security or administrator may not automatically allow.
*Note: Several of the following recommendations will reduce the security level of your machine, make sure you understand the implications of doing so. *Solution 1 - Install “as adminstrator”
If you have administrator access to the PC you are installing on, the first thing to try is to simply right click what you are trying to install and select Run as Administrator. Word clouds for mac. If you don’t have access you’ll have to consult your administrators. You probably already did this though right? Next…Solution 2 - Set Lumension Endpoint Security to allow the HCMON driver
LES is a really popular product among organisation s that want to have granular control of what information can be introduced and removed from their environment. Think disallowing or restricting USB access. You could just disable or uninstall LES, but that kind of defeats the purpose of what it’s trying to achieve. Good news, there is a reg setting that LES uses to allow HCMON to be used.
Note you’ll need access to the registry and the ability to edit it to do this.
*Enable HCMON by creating a EnableHCMON registry value (DWORD type, Data 1) in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesSKParameters.
*Reboot if required.
*Install VMWare Client/PowerCli.
*Disable HCMON by removing the EnableHCMON registry value.
*Reboot the endpoint again.Ensure you have the right version of the .NET framework for the product you are installing
Different products need different .NET versions for example as per KB-2053281 vSphere 5.1 client requires Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1. Make sure you are using the right version, I usually don’t find this to be a problem most products will check for dependencies and either announce it’s not there or go ahead and install it for you.Vmware Remote Console Failed To Install Hcmon Driver Windows 10 64 Bit DownloadBeware of an intermittent known feature issue in vSphere 6
Thought I have never had this issue it is important to know about the issue outlined in KB-2130850. Apparently when attempting to install the VMRC for vSphere 6 on a PC which already has some versions of the vSphere client the install will fail.
